Saratov

Saratov was founded in 1590 as a sentry fortress on the borders of Russia.
Due to its advantageous geographical position Saratov became a provincial industrial center as early as the end of the 19th century.
The city is a port on Russias greatest river, the Volga, and is situated at the crossroads of the trade routes connecting the center of Russia with the Urals and the south.

The unique confluence of European cultures influenced the citys architecture. In the city centre, a large number of private residences and administrative buildings built in the nineteenth and beginning of twentieth centuries in provincial modernist, pseudo-Gothic and Moscow baroque styles have been preserved.
Among the landmarks of modern Saratov is one of the longest bridges in Europe 2.8 kilometers long.
Saratov is one of Russias chief cultural and scholastic centres. There are ten institutions of higher education in the city: among them are Saratov State University, Saratov State Technical University, Saratov State Medical University, Saratov State Law Academy and Saratov State Conservatory.
Presently there are five theatres in Saratov (including the Academic Drama Theatre, the Chernyshevsky Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet and the Young Spectators Theatre), and four museums - the Local History museum and the Radishchev Art Museum which possesses an extraordinarily rich collection of old Russian, Western European, Russian avant-garde and Soviet era art.

Saratov State Technical University (SSTU) is one of the biggest educational and scientific centers across the Volga region and Russia alike.
According to the ranking conducted by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation SGTU ranks among the top 10 technical and technological universities in Russia.
SSTU was established as the Automotive and Road Engineering Institute in 1930. It was renamed Polytechnic Institute in 1960, and was granted the status of the university in 1992.

The University graduates are among the most competitive on the labor market.
One of SSTUs greatest assets is its faculty who possess significant professional experience and enhance the amount and quality of innovation research. Currently 254 SSTU faculty members have a Doctors degree and 864 faculty members have a Candidate of Science degree.
SSTU researchers conduct their innovative activities in 11 branches of knowledge and 24 cutting edge lines of research.

The resources of the University are comprehensive and advanced. The SSTU campus includes 11 buildings with specialized R&D laboratories, computer classrooms, and a library containing about 2 million volumes and periodicals which provide access to research materials published in foreign languages. The University offers sporting facilities and a club to support the students creative activities.
